TAMPA — According to state records, when terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov lived in Florida, he drove something much bigger — and potentially more lethal — than the pickup truck he allegedly used to mow down dozens of bicyclists in New York, Tuesday.
Eight were killed in that attack.
According to motor vehicle records, Saipov, 29, once owned a 60,000 pound tractor trailer similar in size to the one that killed 86 people in a terror attack in Nice, France last year.
Saipov was a professional trucker and he’s lived in Tampa on and off since 2011.
Records show that in June 2015, when he was renting an $800-a-month condo near Busch Gardens, he obtained a Florida Class A driver’s license that allowed him to operate big rigs.
Records show that a month after Saipov got his license, he registered the license plate of a semi-trailer worth about $15,000, a 2006 Freightliner Columbia truck.
The registration papers show that Saipov must’ve bought the tractor-trailer with cash, because there were no lien holders listed.
He was assigned the Florida plate “N93 11U.”
The truck’s registration lapsed in December 2015 when Saipov failed to renew it. It is unclear whether he sold the truck.
According to records, Saipov also bought a Great Dane trailer in 2014 in Ohio and then sold it to a Palm Beach County business in 2016. It’s the type of trailer used for heavy hauling.
One of the owners of the trucking business Mather Home Florida, Yamilet Sanchez Vizcay, said she didn’t remember Saipov.
“I saw his face on television,” she said, “but I have no idea if he ever sold us anything. Don’t know him.”
