PALM BEACH GARDENS — Serena Williams just introduced her baby daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. to the world by posting photos and a video documenting her entire pregnancy this morning.
The little girl, named after Williams’ fiance and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, is Williams’ first child and was born at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
The video posted on SerenaWilliams.com reveals that mother and daughter had to stay in the hospital for six days due to complications. Williams doesn’t elaborate any more than that, but in a clearly cheerful voice says, “Look what we got, a baby girl!”
Her daughter was born Sept. 1 at a healthy 6-pounds, 14-ounces.
In the first photo of Alexis Jr., she’s shown snuggling with mom, all swaddled up in a white blanket.
Dad Alexis Sr., took to social media to make an announcement of his own, complete with a cartoon. Just like he did to announce his engagement to the Palm Beach Gardens-native tennis mega-champ.
He wrote: “Welcome, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr., we’re so happy to meet you. We made you a video of our adventure together so far (see bio). Our little girl is already mama’s perfect sidekick.”
She may be mama’s perfect sidekick, but she did end up with daddy’s name.
Naming a daughter after her father is not a common practice, but there’s likely going to be little commonplace about this little girl.
Williams was eight weeks pregnant with the little one when she won the Australian Open. And we think that’s even less common than a little girl being named after her dad!
