RIVERVIEW — When push comes to shove, most parents will step in to help their children. Unfortunately, in the case of Devbir Kalsi, his parents took that literally.
According to a concerned neighbor, the 33-year-old Devbir regularly beat his wife, Silky Gaind, but felt that he needed backup, so he called his parents, Jasbir Kalsi, 67, and Bhupinder Kalsi, 61, in India. Devbir requested his parents fly to Florida to help him “counsel and discipline” his wife because she was “disobedient,” police say.
The abuse continued, and Gaind was locked in her room and denied access to her cell phone. Nonetheless, she spoke with her own parents in India at some point and alerted them to her situation, which is how word got out and police got involved.
Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office came to the house and were unable to enter with Devbir blocking the door, though Gaind cried out for police to help her and her young daughter, also living in the house.
Deputies then forced their way into the home and arrested Devbir, Jasbir and Bhupinder. The Kalsi trio faces charges of false imprisonment, battery and denying access to 911, among others.
The situation had escalated significantly on Friday following an argument between Devbir and Gaind. According to police, Devbir struck his wife “repeatedly and forcefully” and when Gaind fought back, Jasbir and Bhupinder joined the beating, bruising Gaind severely.
Perhaps worst of all, Gaind’s daughter—in her arms at the time—was hit in the face in the fracas as well.
Devbir also allegedly held a knife at Gaind’s throat and threatened her with it.
“Awful, nobody should go through that. It really is heartbreaking,” a neighbor said. “There’s a brand new baby. But who beats their wife up and his mother and dad help him? Who does that?”
Devbir and his parents are presently locked in Hillsborough County Jail where they’re being held without bail. As it happens, that’s only the second-best of the possible destinations for the group; they’re also at risk of being deported back to India.
Good riddance to them!
