MIAMI — Hide your bongos, Miami, Matthew McConaughey is coming to town.
The “True Detective” is coming to Miami to shoot Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum. Korine is best known as the writer-director of the 2012 hit Spring Breakers, which was filmed in Tampa, Sarasota and St. Petersburg.
Given its pedigree,the film isn’t expected to be a lighthearted rom-com.
This summer, the Dazed and Confused actor released the box office bomb The Dark Tower with Idris Elba, which is based on the Stephen King series. The film, which was considered by critics to be “a dull disappointment,” must have McConaughey jonesing for a hit.
Pre-production on McConaughey’s Miami flick starts September 2, so expect the Texan in town soon.
The film, which is being kept tightly under wraps, is scheduled to film until mid-December.
“They’re keeping it very secretive,” says a source.
One thing that is known is who McConaughey will play. He stars as the lead, “a rebellious stoner named Moondog” who “lives life by his own rules,’’ according to IMDB.com. The film sounds like it’s right up the actor’s alley.
McConaughey, who won the Oscar for Dallas Buyer’s Club, just finished shooting White Rick Boy in Miami as well. The film follows the true story of Richard Wershe Jr., a teenaged FBI informant who became a drug king pin and was eventually sentenced to life in prison. McConaughey played the informant’s father..
The film, which co-stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, will be released next year.
While filming in Miami this summer, McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary.
No word on whether Mrs. McConaughey will be returning to the 305.
