University of Florida Denies Speech Request By White Supremacist Richard Spencer!

GAINESVILLE — Hell no, he won’t go! University of Florida officials have denied a request by white supremacist Richard Spencer to rent space on the campus for a speech slated for September.

UF President W. Kent Fuchs said this morning the decision was made “after assessing risks to the campus, community and law enforcement.” The move by UF comes in the wake of last weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one counter-protester was killed when an alt-right member plowed into a crowd with his Dodge Challenger.

Spencer, the head of the National Policy Institute, had contacted the university over the summer for plans to speak to students on the UF campus next month in Gainesville.

For good measure in his response, Fuchs called Spencer’s racist rhetoric “repugnant and counter to everything the university and this nation stands for.”

Fuchs said UF is dedicated to free speech and public discourse, but the First Amendment doesn’t require risk of imminent violence to students.
