PALM BEACH — Donald Trump has nominated Palm Beacher Frank McCourt‘s ex wife Jamie McCourt to be the ambassador to Belgium.
Jamie’s a major political donor and lined Trump’s campaign and inauguration coffers, but there are few people less qualified to represent America overseas than Jamie McCourt.
She and her husband Frank owned the Dodgers until they had to give it up because they were using it as a personal piggy bank to finance a ridiculously lavish lifestyle.
Overall, the McCourts are said to have taken personal distributions totaling $108 million from the Dodgers over a five-year period, for things like a $10,000 a month hairstylist.
And then there was her super public, super-sticky divorce from Frank, one of the most expensive in California history. While sorting out who slept with who’s driver and what to do with their $1.2 billion in assets, the pair dragged Major League Baseball through the mud and racked up nearly $20 million in attorney fees.
Sounds just like Trump’s kind of lady: she loves money and has stated she has White House aspirations.
Belgium is a small country. It’s no France, but it’s important and it’s a mistake to send in the B-team.
Belgium is in the center of Europe, it is the seat of the European Union, and it’s become an incubator for radical Islamic terrorism.
Is she the best that this country can send?
On paper, she looks pretty good. She was the CEO of the Dodgers, she has a degree in French (one of Belgium’s three official languages) from Georgetown University. She has law degree from the University of Maryland and an MBA from MIT and a diploma from La Sorbonne.
Those are pretty impressive.
But it’s her personal conduct that’s a problem, because being an ambassador isn’t running a company.
It’s more about character, something Jamie clearly lacks.
In case you didn’t know, her shenanigans with the Dodgers — all revealed during her public divorce — left such a bad taste in people’s mouths, she started hosting exclusive wine dinners for 12 friends several times a month so that folks could see she wasn’t as bad as all that.
That isn’t going to work in the international political realm.
