PALM BEACH — For the first time in memory, Donald Trump didn’t attend the yearly Policemen’s Ball at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach but did profess his love for the town’s “great police officers” via video to the cheers of the 500-plus in attendance.
Then Palm Beach’s best and richest managed to raise $1.1 million for scholarships for the children of Palm Beach Police personnel, and of course we were there.
The theme of this year’s 11th annual ball were Elvis Presley and Jailhouse Rock. The foundation supporters, who paid $600 each to attend, were introduced into the ball by the bag pipers of the Palm Beach Pipes & Drums.
Ironically, once they were inside, the decorations made Trump’s ballroom look like a cartoon jailhouse — the type of place Trump clamored to have election nemesis Hillary Trump thrown into.
Former boxer and convicted rapist Mike Tyson also appeared on video to wish mortgage crisis billionaire Jeff Greene well on his first ball as board member of the foundation.
Amazingly, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw showed up in public for the first time after weeks under radar while as many as four of his deputies were arrested in different incidents and one of his commanders resigned while under investigation.
And then, there’s the name of the event: Policemen’s Ball. We know Trump has made it comfortable for folks to be insulting, but the last we checked, there are plenty female cops in the town. How about just Police Ball?
