PALM BEACH — As America’s soon-to-be First Couple, Donald and Melania Trump have been turning heads like never before, and The Donald even enjoyed an impromptu round of applause from midnight Mass congregants at the Palm Beach‘s Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea before this year’s Christmas service.
Of course, it could have been former model Melania’s super-short mini dress that fired up the crowd.
Not typically seen as the most adherent of parishioners, the Trumps’ appearance at the church—where they were married in 2005—was not particularly surprising, since Donald has been playing up his piety of late, vowing to heal a fractured nation where Christianity is under attack.
Apparently, the Trumps’ circle of advisors failed to impart to them just what is and isn’t considered proper attire at a Mass, particularly if you’re trying to come across as “churchy.”
Nonetheless, attendees of the service seemed not to hold Melania’s somewhat unorthodox choice of wardrobe against her, and the Trumps’ warm reception from the congregation was both spirited and genuine.
It was a welcoming setting for a politician who is publicly advocating “Merry Christmas” as a salutation over the somewhat less denominational “Happy Holidays.” (Injecting some confusion into his own message, Trump sent inclusive tweets earlier in the day wishing Americans a “Happy Hanukkah.”)
The president-elect is in Florida for a series of business meetings, at which he will no doubt be received as gladly as he was at Bethesda-by-the-Sea.
And if he’s not, he can always try wearing a mini dress!
