FORT PIERCE — The ex-wife of Omar Mateen, the gunman who killed 50 people in an Orlando nightclub, said the 29-year-old Fort Pierce resident used to beat her.
She told the Washington Post: “He was not a stable person.”
The ex-wife spoke on the condition of anonymity because she fears for her safety.
“He beat me. He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that,” she said.
She said she met Mateen online about eight years ago and moved to Florida to marry him.
They married in March 2009 and lived in a 2-room condo that Mateen’s family owned in Fort Pierce.
She said he wasn’t very religious, “He seemed like a normal human being.”
He worked as a security officer at a juvenile facility and liked to work out.
She and Mateen were only married for a few months.
When her parents learned Mateen had assaulted her, they came to get her. She left all her belongings and never had contact with Mateen again.
According to public records, they were divorced in 2011.
