PALM BEACH — Palm Beach society figure Gerard Haryman has been indicted by federal authorities on three fraud-related charges after he was ensnared in an FBI sting operation, Gossip Extra has learned exclusively.

According to just-unsealed indictment, Haryman is accused of paying kickbacks to an FBI agent posing as the representative of a New York-based investment fund. In exchange, the phony broker’s company bought stock in Haryman’s company at inflated prices.

Haryman, a member of Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago club, could face up to 20 years in the slammer, and a $750,000-fine.

The fund was set up by Boston economic crimes agents for the operation and never existed.

UPDATE: Gerard Haryman’s wife says she’s afraid of him!

Haryman, 70, and six other suspects named so far allegedly paid the undercover agent named “UA” in the indictment $2.5 million in exchange for a $5 million-investment from the fund into the suspects’ companies.

The indictment against Haryman, who’s married to socialite Sara Ayres-Haryman, mentions that the stock purchases would be made in $10,000-$20,000-instalments over the course of several years to further conceal the scheme.

“Secret deals like (these) harm hard working Americans who invest their savings in the financial markets,” said U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz. “Illegal kickbacks undermine fair competition and ultimately destabilize financial markets.”

According to the indictment, Haryman, the CEO of the financial services company A Clean Slate, first met with the undercover in 2011 and openly discussed the scheme to rip off the fund.

Within a month, a first $16,000-purchase of Clean Slate stocks was made and Haryman’s company was wired the money.

In turn, Clean Slate paid the undercover $8,000 through a wire transfer to a shell company.

I’m told the feds raided Haryman’s 10,000-square-foot home at 5 a.m. Feb. 26. They were spotted leaving with boxes of papers after they arrested Haryman. He’s out on bond, and he declined comment.

Haryman’s previous wife, Carol Haryman, died of ovarian cancer shortly after she was released from a federal penitentiary on humanitarian grounds in 2002.

Also a well-known Palm Beacher, Carol had been sentenced to 28 months in prison on a conviction for tax evasion!

Haryman married Ayres within months of Carol’s death.

Haryman’s lawyer has yet to returns a call for comment.

Haryman’s arraignment is scheduled for Thursday in the Boston federal courthouse.
