MIAMI — Former WPTV-Channel 5 weatherman Rob Lopicola was just welcomed into the medium security state prison that’s likely to be his home for the next three years.
It’s yet another Gossip Extra exclusive: The 43-year-old ex-Palm Beach County TV personality, who was convicted of lewd and lascivious conduct and sentenced to 56 months behind bars in December, was assigned the serial number B12448 and is being housed at the Everglades Correctional Institution in the far southern outskirts of Miami.
According to state documents, Lopicola could be free to go on March 6, 2017 — and maybe a little sooner if he behaves. He received credit for his 17 months at the Palm Beach County lockup while awaiting trial.
Sporting a new close-cropped hair style, Lopicola was processed at ECI on Jan. 6 as intake officers photographed him, gave him a set of prison blues and catalogued his tattoos, all seven of them.
Lopicola lives among 1,800 other inmates from all over Florida, all of them sentenced to more than one year.
It’s a medium security facility, one in which inmates do no present a clear risk of flight but yet are watched by armed guards.
Incidentally, the prison is next door to the federal Krome Detention Center, where thousands of illegal aliens are housed while awaiting deportation.
Lopicola will be offered to continue his education with a choice of programs, including anger and stress management, smoking cessation, access to a law library, sports and wellness education.
Lopicola was one of the area’s most popular weather forecasters when, in 2005, he was mysteriously fired from the NBC affiliate.
During his trial for sex with two underage boys, Lopicola admitted he was fired for sending naked selfies to a man who didn’t appreciate the photos.
