DORAL — For sale: U.S. tennis legend Arthur Ashe’s old house in Doral – at four times what Ashe sold it for in 1992, months before he died!
These days, the golf-course property at 9473 NW 49th Doral Lane at Doral Estates looks like your average suburban number – even with a price tag of $1.2 million.
But area old timers know it was the homestead of Ashe, the first black American tennis champ, and his wife Jeanne for nearly 10 years.
According to newspaper accounts of the era, Ashe moved in a year after he retired from the sport with three Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon, and became a featured speaker at the numerous conventions at the Doral Country Club.
He also played charity and exhibition matches in the community.
Partly because he fought for racial equality at a time when tennis was almost all white, Ashe was an icon when he died from AIDS complications in 1993.
He was just 49 and contracted the disease he contracted during heart surgery.
Realtors in the Doral area were reluctant to talk about the home, which is not advertised as Ashe’s old home.
The three-bedroom, 3,547-square-foot house has been on the market for nearly a year, and MLS listings describes it as “perfect for entertaining.” It was bought and sold three times since Ashe lived there.
