WEST PALM BEACH — Former WPTV-Channel 5 weatherman Rob Lopicola appeared as cool as a January morning when he took the stand in his own defense minutes ago in his sex-with-teen-boys trial.
Lopicola, 43, answered calmly and professionally when questioned by both his assistant public defender and prosecutors for less than an hour.
Whether he was telling truth, well, prosecutors have no doubt he’s lying!
In a nutshell: There was never any sex with his two accusers, boys who were 15 and 17 in 2010 and 2011 — although authorities say Lopicola allegedly performed oral sex on them in his car or at the West Palm Beach house of the older boy.
“The accusations are humiliating,” the former star meteorologist said. “I sexted a lot . . . but that’s just part of a fantasy world. Like in a pornographic movie.”
The court is in recess for lunch and closing arguments are expected this afternoon.
Lopicola is charged with unlawful sexual activity of a minor, lewd and lascivious conduct, lewd and lascivious battery and child exploitation, all felonies.
He’s been held in jail since his arrest in July 2012 because he’s been unable to pay his $130,000-bond. Lopicola’s had financial problems since he left the station abruptly in 2008 under mysterious circumstances that WPTV officials never discussed with viewers.
Many of the questions this morning centered on hundreds of text messages that Lopicola exchanged with the boys, including X-rated photos.
In some of the texts, Lopicola begged the boys to call him “dad.” In others, he sought photos of the boys’ genitals and commented on the slender body of the younger one.
Lopicola met the boys on Craigslist but claimed under oath he was under the impression they were 18.
