Top South Florida restaurateur/caterer/party planner/entrepreneur Barton G. was the victim of an accident at the home of his galpal in The Hamptons and may be hospitalized.
Barton G., aka Barton G. Weiss, is rumored to have sustained serious injuries in a fall, according to several sources — injuries potentially so crippling that his entourage has been told not to discuss it!
Weiss, 57, has been spending a part of the summer in Quogue, N.Y., at the house of socialite Jill Viner.
She’s the multi-millionaire ex-wife of Florida Panthers owner Cliff Viner, and she’s been dating Weiss for more than a year.
Last weekend, however, Weiss may have suffered a freak fall at the house, and it was bad enough to send him to the hospital!
The extent of his injuries have not been made public and his dozens of employees have not been briefed officially on the situation. Those who ask are being told Weiss is dealing “with a personal matter.”
Only top managers, and Viner, know what happened and are not answering repeated inquiries about Weiss’ health.
Charlie Cinnamon, Weiss’ publicist, did not return calls about the incident for several days.
He finally put out a short statement that read: “Event impresario and restaurateur Barton G. recently sustained an injury in New York, is on the mend and looking forward to the soon-to-be announced opening Barton G. L.A. As always, it’s business as usual.”
One employee who agreed to discuss it under the condition to remain anonymous told me the boss hasn’t been heard from in a week.
“It’s unusual,” the source said, “and there’s definitely something going on, but they’re keeping this under wraps. We’re expanding big time, so no one wants to give the impression there’s something wrong with the company founder.”
Known for off-beat menus that include lobster pop tarts and Boarnie Madoff Bucket of Bones, the company runs the popular Barton G. The Restaurant on West Street in Miami Beach.
It’s also opening a sister restaurant in West Hollywood, Calif., and is gearing for the publication of a series of books by Weiss.
