The critics blasting President Barack Obama for his receiving the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins at the White House Tuesday can buzz off.

The 17-0 team’s Hall of Fame QB says the visit is long overdue!

“It’s the right thing to do for the White House,” Bob Griese told Paul Castronovo and Ron Brewer on this morning’s Paul & Young Ron on Big 105.9. “We’re the only team that went undefeated. It’s an honor for us to go. It’s long overdue.”

Coach Don Shula‘s undefeated Fins were never invited to a traditional winners’ visit with the commander-in-chief in the wake of Super Bowl VII. At the time, Richard Nixon was immersed in the Watergate Scandal and would resign the following year.

And this White House visit 40 years after the fact came after Dolphins representatives reached out to Obama’s staff with the idea. The Prez invited the Fins in spite of plenty of GOP voices claiming he’s got better things to do.

Current team owner Stephen Ross, who actively campaigned against Obama’s reelection and poured cash into Mitt Romney‘s effort, will be footing this bill.

Most of the players have RSVP’ed, including running back Larry Csonka, who’s flying in from Alaska.
