Pat Murphy Out at CBS12!

Sports anchor Pat Murphy is set to leave WPEC-Channel 12 this summer after 25-plus years of covering South Florida’s professional sports and the high school and amateur scenes in West Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast.

Sportscaster Pat Murphy plans to retire from CBS12 in August

Murphy, 56, is preparing to move to Texas in August and may get out of television altogether, according to insiders at the struggling PEC. Murphy’s wife, Lisa, works for a Texas healthcare company and his leaving the station would cut down on her travels.

The sportscaster of the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, and Sports Plus at 11:30 p.m. Sundays, hung up the phone early today when asked about his pending move.

Murphy started out at WPTV-Channel 5 for 10 years before making the switch to CBS 12 about 10 years ago.

WPEC officials aren’t commenting, which could indicate that Murphy’s contract isn’t being renewed. Last August, the station refused to renew news anchor Curt Fonger‘s contract after 23 years.

Nationally, the likes of Murphy have been a dying breed on local television stations. An increasing number of newscasts have done away with sports, sending viewers to ESPN for the night’s scores.

Over the years, Murphy won six Florida Sportscaster Awards for anchoring, reporting and specials, and in 2001, he was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame for his covering local sports.

Murphy held his 23rd annual charity golf tournament at BallenIsles Country Club earlier this month.
