Bill Gates, America’s richest man, won’t exercise the option to buy the Wellington house he is renting for $600,000 this winter, Gossip Extra has learned.

Real estate sources in horse country are telling me the Microsoft founder complained about the lack of security in the gated South Shore community of Mallet Hill and the lack of a world-class barn on the property.

As Gossip Extra reported exclusively in October, Gates signed the rental agreement on the 7,300-square-foot house so that his 15-year-old daughter Jennifer could learn showjumping in Wellington‘s professional environment. He had an option to buy for $12.9 million.

Since then, however, Gates’ security people have told him the fact that Mallet Hill only has one access road with a manned security gate wouldn’t prevent someone who really wants to harm him or his family from entering. And the barn currently on the property is aging.
The good thing: It’s not that Gates doesn’t think we’re not worthy. His family likes the area.
“Mr. Gates hasn’t given up on the area,” said one Realtor who asked to remain anonymous. “He started looking again.”
