Troubled West Palm Beach Police Captain Saves His Job — But Returns as Police Officer

Capt. Randy Maale, one of the highest-ranking cops at the West Palm Beach Police Department, was supposed to be fired today.

Instead, City Administrator Ed Mitchell made him a proposition he couldn’t refuse: He gave Maale the choice of being fired or demoted to police officer.

The 25-year veteran picked the latter, accepting what is believed to be the steepest demotion in department history!

Most of the former captain’s trouble stem from his “special” relationship with Cathy Cognetti, a 25-year-old subordinate. That already cost him a week-long¬†suspension in November when he was found guilty of extending her preferential treatment as other officers seethed.

The married Maale was also found to have had allowed on-duty cops at his Memorial Day party in 2010 at his home in Palm Beach Gardens.

He was expected to be fired a week ago, but then offered to rat out other police supervisors. Mitchell had given him until today to bring evidence that others in his position were involved in unprofessional conduct that goes unpunished.

It’s unclear what Maale told Mitchell at this point but chances are that Internal Affairs sleuths will be busy over the next few months.

Maale turned off his cell phone Wednesday night and didn’t return calls.
