Makayla Sitton‘s grieving parents aren’t going to go away quietly.
Friends of WPTV-Channel 5 cameraman Jim Sitton and his pregnant wife Muriel are planning a rally in front of State Attorney Michael McAuliffe‘s office. The gathering is to protest McAuliffe’s decision to accept a plea deal that keeps the killer of their 6-year-old daughter Makayla and three others on Thanksgiving Day 2009 off death row.
The protest is planned for Nov. 10 in front of 401 N. Dixie Hwy downtown West Palm Beach. Organizers are planning to pull the permits this week.
I’m told Jim Sitton isn’t scheduled to attend since WPTV newsroom employees aren’t supposed to participate in political gatherings so they can maintain their neutrality.
The protest is scheduled to take place two weeks before the second anniversary of Makayla Sitton’s death at her family’s home in Jupiter. She and three adult family members methodically were shot and killed by Paul Merhige, who pleaded guilty Oct. 27. In exchange for the plea, he was sentenced to seven life sentences instead of risk being handed the death penalty in a trial.
