It’s almost too stereotypical: The owner of a French restaurant riding his Vespa to work!
The stereotype, however, almost turned deadly for Thierry Beaud, who runs the West Palm Beach bistro Pistache and is about to open a new fish place at the old 251 Sunrise in Palm Beach.
The Bordeau-born Beaud, a popular veteran of the Palm Beach nightlife who got his start at the infamous Au Bar more than 20 years ago, is recovering at home this week after a SUV crashed into his silver-colored Vespa motorcyle Oct. 27 on Royal Poinciana in Palm Beach.
The car may have gone through a red light and sent him flying to the ground via the SUV’s windshield.
Beaud wasn’t wearing a helmet but suffered only a concussion and a broken nose and plenty skin abrasions in the mishap. It occurred at a busy intersection just east of the bridge.
“I was unconscious for a while,” Beaud said. “I woke up in the ambulance.”
Lucky? You bet! Beaud says his Vespa-riding days are over.
